Background Information
Wnt inhibitory factor 1 (WIF-1), encoded by a highly conserved gene on human chromosome 12q14, is a critical extracellular morphogen antagonist. Structurally comprising a specialized WIF domain and five EGF-like repeats, this secreted protein aberration-proofs tissues by directly sequestering Wnt ligands. Consequently, it restrains downstream signaling during development and functions predominantly as an epigenetically silenced tumor suppressor. (PMID: 10201374; 19307728; 21743455).
