Background Information
Piccolo is a presynaptic scaffolding protein of the cytomatrix assembled at the active zone (AZ). AZ is a special region of the presynaptic plasma membrane where synaptic vesicles (SVs) fuse. It has been shown that Piccolo affects presynaptic function by negatively regulating SV exocytosis (PMID: 18519737).
