Background Information

MRPL20 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein L20) is a 149-amino-acid nuclear-encoded protein that belongs to the bacterial ribosomal protein bL20 family. As a structural constituent of the mitochondrial ribosome , MRPL20 localizes to the 39S large subunit, where it integrates into the mitochondrial inner membrane and facilitates the synthesis of mitochondrial genome-encoded proteins-including essential transmembrane subunits of the mitochondrial respiratory chain-by participating in all three phases of mitochondrial translation: initiation, elongation, and termination.
