Background Information
ZAN (Zonadhesin) is a sperm-specific type-I transmembrane glycoprotein essential for species-restricted binding between spermatozoa and the egg's zona pellucida. First isolated from boar sperm, it is expressed solely in post-meiotic male germ cells (early spermatids) and localises to the apical segment of the sperm head.
