Background Information
Uroplakins are a group of urothelial differentiation-related membrane proteins. They are components of the asymmetric unit membrane (AUM), which forms the apical plaques of mammalian urothelium and is believed to play a role in strengthening the urothelial apical surface thus preventing the cells from rupturing during bladder distention (PMID: 8175808). Uroplakin III (UPK3A) is a promising new urine marker for bladder cancer detection (PMID: 20346489). Loss of UPK3A expression is associated with clinicopathological features of invasive bladder cancer and poor prognosis in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (PMID: 18313120; PMID: 16686732). UPK3A has a calculated molecular weight of 30.7 kDa, with an apparent molecular weight of 47 kDa due to three potential N-glycosylation sites.
