Background Information
ST6GALNAC5 is a member of the sialyltransferase family, specifically a type II membrane protein that catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to glycoproteins and glycolipids. It plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of sialyl-Tn antigen (sTn), a tumor-associated carbohydrate antigen commonly overexpressed in various adenocarcinomas, including breast, gastric, and colorectal cancers. Aberrant expression of ST6GALNAC5 is closely linked to cancer progression, metastasis, and poor clinical prognosis.
