Background Information
SOX11 (SRY-box transcription factor 11) is a member of the SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) family of transcription factors that plays a critical role in regulating embryonic development and cell fate determination. As a key regulator, the SOX11 protein functions by binding to specific DNA regions and coordinating with other proteins to activate genes essential for the development of the brain and nervous system. It is highly expressed during embryogenesis in various tissues, particularly the developing central and peripheral nervous system, but is largely absent in most adult differentiated tissues. Beyond its fundamental role in development, dysregulated SOX11 expression has been implicated in a wide range of diseases. It is notably associated with neurodevelopmental disorders like Coffin-Siris syndrome, where mutations in the SOX11 gene are a known cause, and plays a significant, context-dependent role in various cancers, such as mantle cell lymphoma, where its expression serves as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker.
