Background Information
Sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin 5 (Siglec-5), also known as CD170, is a member of the CD33-related Siglec subfamily. Siglec-5 is a type-I transmembrane protein consisting of an N-terminal extracellular region that contains four extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane region, and an intracellular domain with two tyrosine-based motifs (PMID: 9731071). It is expressed on neutrophils, monocytes, dendritic cells, and subsets of tissue macrophages (PMID: 15769739). Siglec-5 binds alpha-2,3-linked, alpha-2,6-linked sialic acid, and is involved in cell adhesion (PMID: 18022638).
