Background Information
SECISBP2 (also called SECIS-binding protein 2 or SBP2) is an RNA-binding protein that serves as the master regulator of selenoprotein synthesis in eukaryotes. It recognizes and binds the SECIS (SEC Insertion Sequence) stem-loop structure located in the 3′-UTR of all selenoprotein mRNAs, thereby converting the otherwise stop-coding UGA triplet into the 21st amino acid selenocysteine (Sec) during translation.
