Background Information
MMP8 (Matrix metalloproteinase-8) an enzyme that degrades fibrillar collagens imparting strength to the fetal membranes, is expressed by leukocytes and chorionic cytotrophoblast cells. MMP8 plays a vital role in a variety of physiological illnesses namely cardiovascular, renal, digestive, and respiratory ailments including cancer. In breast cancer, high plasma levels of MMP-8 may have a protective effect against lymph node metastasis, and in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma, high tumour MMP-8 expression is associated with improved cancer-specific survival (CSS). In addition, serum MMP-8 levels increase in colorectal cancer (CRC) and correlate with distant metastasis.
