Background
Fas Ligand (also known as FasL, CD95L and CD178) is a 40-kDa type II transmembrane protein that binds to Fas (CD95), a widely expressed glycosylated cell surface molecule of 45-52-kDa. Fas Ligand is primarily expressed by lymphocytes and other immune cell types, such as Natural Killer (NK) cells. These cells induce Fas signaling on cells targeted for removal by the immune system resulting in the activation of apoptosis in sensitive cells. Fas Ligand and Fas, play an essential role in deletion of peripheral T cells and in homeostasis of organ tissues such as liver.
