Background Information
The receptor activity-modifying proteins (RAMPs) and the calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CRLR) are both required to generate adrenomedullin (AM) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptors. During the process, RAMP3 transports the glycosylated CGRPR to the cell surface. The formation of CRLR-RAMP heterodimer is essential for the proper cell surface targeting and pharmacological characteristics of both CGRP and AM receptors. RAMP3 exists in different molecular weight forms: 19 kDa monomer, 35-40 kDa monomer heteroglycosylation, 50 kDa homodimer, and 73 kDa heterodimer (PMID: 19546305).
