Background
Serpin C1 is a plasma protease inhibitor belonging to the serpin superfamily. It plays a critical role in regulating the blood coagulation cascade and the complement system by inhibiting various activated serine proteases of the coagulation system, including thrombin. It is synthesized in the liver and secreted into the bloodstream, circulating as an inhibitor of serine proteases. Serpin C1 is the major control serpin of the kallikrein-kinin system (KKS), and its deficiency can lead to uncontrolled activation of KKS, resulting in the generation of the vasoactive peptide bradykinin, which is associated with hereditary angioedema (HAE).
