Background
Regenerating islet-derived 2 (Reg2) is a trophic factor that stimulates β-cell replication and protects against islet destruction. Reg2 also serves as an islet autoantigen that induces autoimmune assaults on the islets and worsens diabetic progression. Injection of Reg2 protein into NOD mice can delay the course of diabetes at an early stage and improve the anti-apoptosis ability of pancreatic β cells.
