Background

Ki67 is a nuclear protein encoded by the MKI67 gene, widely recognized as a marker for cell proliferation. It is expressed in all active phases of the cell cycle (G1, S, G2, and M) but absent in quiescent cells (G0). Initially identified by the monoclonal antibody Ki-67, its expression correlates with the growth fraction of tumor cells, making it a critical tool in oncology for assessing tumor aggressiveness and patient prognosis. Beyond proliferation, recent studies highlight Ki67's role in chromatin organization, ribosomal RNA transcription, and mitotic chromosome architecture, underscoring its multifunctionality in cellular processes.
