Background Information
Murine Esm1 (Endothelial Specific Molecule-1/Endocan) is a proteoglycan secreted by vascular endothelial cells, with a core protein molecular weight of approximately 20 kDa. As a key regulator in vascular biology and the tumor microenvironment, its biological activity is highly dependent on a covalently linked dermatan sulfate glycosaminoglycan chain. Esm1 plays crucial roles in physiological angiogenesis and inflammatory responses by directly promoting endothelial cell proliferation and migration, as well as mediating leukocyte adhesion through interactions with integrins such as LFA-1. Under pathological conditions, it is significantly overexpressed in various malignant tumors and inflammatory diseases, driving abnormal neovascularization by enhancing signaling pathways like VEGF. Consequently, it has become an important biomarker for tumor angiogenesis and a potential indicator for inflammatory monitoring.
