Background
CXC motif chemokine ligand 16 (CXCL16) is classified as an α sub-family chemokine because it has a CXC motif at the N-terminus. Nevertheless, this chemokine lacks the ELR motif, which is common in other pro-angiogenic CXC chemokines. CXCL16 is expressed in lymphoid organs such as the thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, and Peyer’s patches, but not in bone marrow. It is also expressed in the liver, lung, small intestine, and kidney.
