Background Information
MC1R is a Gs-coupled melanocortin receptor that regulates melanin synthesis, UV response, and inflammatory signaling in melanocytes. Activation by α-MSH elevates cAMP to promote eumelanin production and DNA repair, enhancing photoprotection. Functional polymorphisms in MC1R underlie pigmentation diversity and significantly influence melanoma susceptibility, positioning MC1R as a central regulator of cutaneous biology and photoprotection.
