Background Information
BIRC7 also known as Livin, is one of the family members of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP). BIRC7 contains a BIR domain that has been shown to bind and inhibit caspases-3, −7 and −9, playing a key role in inhibiting apoptosis. Overexpression of BIRC7 in tumors has been linked with increased chemo- and radio-resistance, recurrence, and decreased patient survival. BIRC7 is closely associated with melanoma disease progression, apoptosis resistance, and chemotherapeutic drug resistance.
