Background
Endogenous erythropoietin (EPO), the primary regulator in the production of red blood cells, is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the kidneys in response to hypoxia and anemia. There is a physiologic rise in EPO levels during pregnancy, which increases red blood cell production.
