Background
BTN2A1, or butyrophilin subfamily 2 member A1, is a protein-coding gene that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is located in a cluster of butyrophilin-like genes in the juxta-telomeric region of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on chromosome 6. The encoded protein is an integral plasma membrane protein that plays a role in lipid, fatty-acid, and sterol metabolism. The BTN2A1 gene is expressed ubiquitously, with particularly high expression in the spleen and appendix. BTN2A1 has been identified as a potential immune checkpoint that targets Vγ9Vδ2 T cell cytotoxicity against malignant cells, suggesting its involvement in immune responses.
