Background Information
HTR4 (5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 4, 5-HT4) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) belonging to the serotonin receptor family. HTR4 is widely expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, and cardiovascular system, where it regulates gastrointestinal motility, neurotransmission, learning and memory, and cardiac function. The neurotransmitter 5-HT is mainly secreted by enterochromaffin (EC) cells, and its extracellular levels are regulated by the sodium-dependent serotonin transporter solute carrier family 6 member 4 (SLC6A4). EC cells are neurosensory cells located in the intestinal epithelium that convert the perceived intestinal environmental signals into 5-HT secretion, thereby contributing to intestinal motility.
