Background Information
HP1BP3 (heterochromatin protein 1-binding protein 3) is an evolutionarily conserved nuclear protein that functions as a non-canonical linker histone. It is broadly expressed in most vertebrate tissues and is structurally related to the histone H1 family, containing three globular domains and a highly basic C-terminal tail reminiscent of H1 proteins . Unique to HP1BP3 are an acidic N-terminal stretch and a consensus HP1-binding motif (PxVxL), through which it associates with heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1α/β) and is enriched at perinucleolar heterochromatin regions marked by H3K9me3. Functionally, HP1BP3 acts as a modulator of gene expression and genome stability. Alternative splicing was reported to produce 4 different isoforms of HP1BP3, the calculated MW corresponding to 61, 57, 44, 15 kDa.
