Background Information
GPX5 belongs to the glutathione peroxidase family. GPX5 protects cells and enzymes from oxidative damage, by catalyzing the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxides and organic hydroperoxide, by glutathione. Catalytic the reaction: 2 glutathione + H2O2 = glutathione disulfide + 2 H2O. GPX5 constitute a glutathionine peroxidase-like protective system against peroxide damage in sperm membrane lipids. GPX5 has a calculated molecular mass of 25 kDa and apparent molecular mass of 22-28 kDa due to the cleavage of signal peptide and glycosylation.
