Background Information
GALNTL2, also known as GALNT15, is a member of the polypeptide ppGalNAc-T family. It catalyzes the initial step in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis by transferring an N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residue to serine or threonine residues on protein receptors. Though it shows weaker activity compared to GALNT2, it can transfer up to seven GalNAc residues to the Muc5AC peptide, suggesting cooperative action with other GALNT proteins. GALNTL2 is widely expressed, with high expression in tissues like the small intestine, placenta, spleen, cerebral cortex, and ovary.
