Background Information
Claudins are a family of proteins that are the most important components of the tight junctions, where they establish the paracellular barrier that controls the flow of molecules in the intercellular space between the cells of an epithelium. Claudin-5 is a tight junction protein primarily expressed in endothelial cells, forming the blood-brain barrier. It regulates paracellular permeability and is crucial for vascular integrity. Altered expression is linked to blood-brain barrier disruption in neurological diseases and cancer metastasis.
