Background
Stem cell factor (SCF), also known as mast cell growth factor, steel factor and Kit ligand, is a haematopoietic growth factor. SCF is a critical protein with key roles in the cell such as haematopoiesis, gametogenesis and melanogenesis. SCF activates multiple signalling pathways by binding to the c-kit receptor. SCF and its receptor, c-kit ligand (KL), are particularly upregulated in human malignancies, including gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs), breast cancer, haematopoietic malignancies, myeloid leukaemia and gliomas. The SCF/c-KIT system also plays an important role in cell fate decision and its activity is known to control cell proliferation, differentiation, survival and apoptosis.
