Background Information
AKR1D1 (steroid 5β-reductase) reduces all Δ 4-3-ketosteroids to form 5β-dihydrosteroids, a first step in the clearance of steroid hormones and an essential step in the synthesis of all bile acids. It is also named as SRD5B1 and belongs to the aldo/keto reductase family. This protein has 3 isoforms produced by alternative splicing.
