Background
Human SAA proteins are a group of apolipoproteins mainly found in the high density lipoprotein (HDL) portion of plasma. The serum amyloid A (SAA) protein is an acute phase apolipoprotein reactant produced mainly by hepatocytes and under the regulation of inflammatory cytokines. Reactive, secondary amyloidosis is characterized by the extracellular accumulation in various tissues of the SAA2 protein.
