Background

IL-17C is a member of the IL-17 cytokine family, was cloned from a human fetal kidney library in 2000 . The IL-17 family comprises at least 6 proinflammatory cytokines that share a conserved cystine-knot structure but diverge at the N-terminus. IL-17 family members are glycoproteins that induce local cytokine production and recruit granulocytes to sites of inflammation. IL-17C is selectively induced in epithelia by bacterial challenge and inflammatory stimuli . IL-17RE is a receptor specific to IL-17C and has an essential role in host mucosal defense against infection.
